Sam’s Club is Saying Goodbye to Checkout Lanes
Say goodbye to checkout lanes at Sam’s Club!
Sam’s Club is planning to remodel all of its existing locations in the coming year and will be removing traditional and self-checkout lanes from all stores!
If you typically go through the checkout lanes, you’ll have to transition to the Sam’s Club app and checkout using Scan & Go instead.
Shoppers will enter the store and start scanning items they want to purchase. Once the purchase is completed on the app, customers will receive a digital receipt and can exit the store through an airport-style security arch where cameras scan the cart from the top and sides to check that all items were scanned.
Are you excited about this change? Let us know in the comments below!
This is what I do already so no change for me. I love it but know others (like my mom in love) will not like it at all. I can’t even imagine how had it would have been when my guys were little so I do think this will be especially hard for those with littles in tow.
What happens if your phone dies?
good question!
I love scan & go. I wish Costco would offer the same.
Costco’s lanes are fast so I do not care if they do not have scan and go. Besides, Scan and Go is a big cause of fraud. This happened to Sam’s Club already and is happening with Walmart right now, but they have not learned. Those losses are paid by consumers so I’m fine with Costco.
This is bizarre to me. They will lose a lot of customers this way.
I agree!!
Smh, my parents r much older and not as phone savvy and just makes me sad for the older people who will have to deal with all these unnecessary changes
My telephone never load my Sam’s card. I requested old fashioned card ( it was hard to get).
Yes I agree it’s hard when you don’t have a good signal and additionally for elderly people it will be difficult to use . I asked for a card and was told they don’t give them out anymore.
Just something else to make me feel a little more out of place. I use cash to make most of my purchases.
I just don’t like not having at least a couple of options in case one option isn’t available for whatever reason. In theory this sounds great but so many things to take into consideration. My mom wouldn’t be able to use the scan n go option. My relative who shopped Sams all the time never owned a smart phone in his life. Over 70 crowd. This isn’t a good idea in my opinion.
I agree. My parents are 85 and 91. They have had a Sam’s Club membership for years but don’t own a smart phone. Options need to be available for everyone.
I agree with one of the comments I want a back uvp o pay in case something goes wrong with the scan and go app.
I already use scan and go for the most part, but don’t like it for everyone. Also, there are people who still like using cash, so this is no good for everyone. I think they may lose a lot of customers doing this.
Sometimes I buy stuff for our business and stuff for personal. I need two separate transactions with 2 different payment methods. It’s easier to go through the checkout for that.
Me too. I use scan n go for my personal stuff, then a register for business items.
I don’t see how they can get rid of all of the registers.
We also do two transactions, one for personal and one for business…
I do this too!
You should be able to add more than one credit card to your account. Then you can do multiple transactions, using whatever CC you would like.
You can have multiple cards but I don’t think there is an option to have multiple orders going at the same time. I buy for home and for church. I use scan & go for one, self checkout for the other. I was thinking a person would have to go through the store twice. A waste of tome
I haven’t tried to like that yet but it did allow me to do scan and go for my groceries, then again to buy at the cafe. Then I pulled up the barcode to show at the exit. Maybe if it’s not an option yet, they will add it before they remove regular checkout lanes.
I wish Ibotta would allow us to connect the membership, receipts need up to uploaded and digital receipts don’t count. I always forget about this until after I’ve checked out.
They’ll lose all the senior customers. No way my parents could use scan and go. They’re in their 80’s.
Not good for me as I haven’t even downloaded the app and that would annoy me shopping. Most of my purchases are online with them as stores are 45 minutes or farther away. I don’t even always have my phone with me so another store would get my business. I am selective on the apps I download as always running out of phone space and them needing updating. At 50, I just can’t see seniors shopping there at all unless accompanied by someone that uses the app. Sounds like they just want to reduce their employees and make it harder to find help in store.
Ditto!! I know of 4 more customers they will lose, too.
Seriously!!!! Well they just lost my business for good. Always problems using phone in stores. What a completely stupid idea!
What if you wanted to pay in cash? I thought it was illegal for a business to not accept cash.
Good question! I don’t find any details on if a cash payment option might still be available when this rolls out. You could always double check with your location on if they may honor that method as well. We’ll keep watch for any new details that pop up! 🤗💕
Not a great idea . I’m not a fan . Parents are in 80’s
Gonna lose some customers by doing this !!
“All hail the app!”
Not for senior citizens who don’t have phones that use those apps.
Shame on Sam’s club Hope they lose all kinds of business they deserve to.im sure a lot of the elderly don’t have smart phones. Nothing but Greed
I personally been with Sam’s wholesale club for 30 years. I will leave and shop elsewhere.
I never get signal inside the stores that saddles for me. I’m a busy person. I don’t have time for this nonsense.
Amen! Well said! I’m not a member, and knowing this I won’t be!
I think you will lose customers and rightly so. This is a convenience for many but a deal breaker for older adults, those who forgot their phone at home or in the car, lost or broke their phone, battery is dead, or just enjoy having a human there who provides this expected service that every other retail store provides!!!
NOPE. I’m 55 and do not use a smart phone. Neither do my elderly parents.
And there are people with disabilities who cannot use smart phones………my dad is legally blind.
I work with adults that have developmental disabilities and many of them (especially seniors) do not have cell phones. Cell phones should not be required for shopping.
Will customers be able to purchase gift cards through the scan and go feature?
Good question, Nickea. It seems there aren’t specific details released yet on the purchase of gift cards. Stay tuned! ❤️
I am not an employee of Sam’s Club and should be forced to use self-checkout. I like the personable interaction with a live person. I hope they don’t get rid of all, because I will become a member of Costco due to the one-on-one interaction. I have been with Sam’s club for 15+ years and I can easily make the switch.
Guess I won’t be going to Sams when they start this.
I want to know what people who don’t have an iPhone will do. I guess Sam’s doesn’t care about them. What about older people ? Sounds to me like the higher ups didn’t think this through unless they want to get rid of 1/2 of their clientele?

No, I’m not. My mother doesn’t use technology. Why not keep a few lanes open for those that don’t want to have scan and go?
I just renewed my membership and now I wish I hadn’t because I probably will only be using it for gas purchases
Nope. Not going to give Sam’s club my CC info in the app. They will lose me as a customer–and I’m a decent one as my usual check out tab is around $300 weekly. I’m guessing and hope many will drop purchasing there if they covert to this eliminating check outs. My friend used to be with the security and fraud department at Sam’s club for many years and in her opinion those who use this are asking for their information to be stolen….eventually….
Have been a customer for longer than I can remember but I will not use scan and go. Walmart tried it and now they have people looking over your shoulder, maybe looking at your credit card, so if Sams does away with checkout they will do away with me.
